Rossmore Castle

The ruins of Rossmore Castle now stand in Rossmore Park, only several kilometres outside Monaghan town. It was built in 1827 in the Tudor Gothic style by the third Lord Rossmore, Henry Westenra. A large extension, added in 1858, was built in the Scottish baronial style and was designed by William Henry Lynn. This extension added two new towers to the Castle, bringing the total to three, the original being a large turreted square tower. Loughcrew Cairns

The Loughcrew Cairns are said to be one of the oldest cemeteries in the world. They offer exquisite insights into Ireland's neolithic past but also pose questions about their thoughts of the afterlife. Similarly to Newgrange, Cairn T which is the largest passage grave on the site, is precisely positioned to flood with light only on a few days each year, in this case during the autumnal equinox. As with Newgrange, these cairns pre-date the pyramids of Egypt by some 2,000 years.

Rossmore Forest Park
