Blessington Lakes

Blessington Lake is in fact a man-made resevoir and was created by damming the River Liffey at Poulaphuca. The project took 10 years to complete and provides Dublin with a steady supply of drinking water. The flooding of several towns began in 1940 and more than 70 homes were destroyed. Origianl roadways can still be seen leading into the water. The lakes are now used for recreational purposes such as kayaking, sailing, fishing and more.
