Staigue Fort

Thought to have been built around 300AD for a local King or wealthy landowner, Staigue Fort is the largest stone fort in Ireland. Built to protect his family and posessions, the fort is complete with 5.5m thick walls and surrounded by a deep, wide ditch.

The Dunbeg Promontory Fort, standing near the town of Fahan on the Dingle peninsula, is a clifftop stone fort dating back to the Iron Age, c.500BC. It's exposure to the harsh Atlantic elements over two and a half thousand years has caused much erosion but the overall stone structure is in surprisingly good condition. The Dunbeg Promontory Fort is one of Ireland's best examples of a clifftop stone fort and commands spectacular views out over the Atlantic Ocean.
